E-Bikes With Attitude

Bicycles have always been a go-to for exploring, commuting, and even competition. Between gas prices skyrocketing and more people choosing to enjoy the outdoors, having a bike to get further off the path is ideal. However, anyone who has tried to bike several miles across town, down a mountain, or across a beach knows that there’s a fair amount of effort required to paddle all the way there and back.

Enter the “E-bike” by affixing an electric motor to a bike frame; cyclists could push their distance even further than with a conventional bike. E-bikes can pick up the slack in long-distance rides and pick up speed too.

The mover and shaker in the E-bike world are FLX. FLX was started in 2016 to be the best E-bike on the market. With a catalog of half a dozen purpose-built designs, FLX has a bike for the city-based commuter to the backcountry explorer. FLX’s bikes have ranges of up to 70 miles and can reach speeds of 28 miles an hour. If you are looking for an E-bike to extend your range on and off the beaten path or skip the traffic, FLX has a bike for you.

BABYMAKER II™

The Babymaker is FLX’s ultra-lightweight speed bike. Wholly crowdfunded, the Babymaker is assembled in the US to streamline delivery dates and help create jobs stateside. Unlike traditional E-bikes, the Babymaker’s battery and motor are inside the frame creating a sleek design. Weighing just 35 pounds, the bike won’t feel like a burden if you need to carry it up to your apartment or hoist it onto your bike rack.

The 300-watt rear hub motor can crank out speeds as high as 25 miles per hour while keeping noise to a minimum, with no annoying whine noise from this unit. The belt drive is a carbon cord to reduce the need for grease or any maintenance. Pairing the cord with the smart hub reduces the need for gear changes. The hydraulic disc breaks will allow you to stop no matter how fast you are cranking it.

STEP THROUGH 2.0

The Step-Through is an excellent choice for bikers looking to enjoy the ride. The low slung frame makes mounting the bike simple.

The front suspension reduces any bumps in the road that would otherwise become teeth chattering. Comfort was a significant factor in the bike’s design; swept handlebars reduce shoulder strain while even the seat is designed for a comfortable ride.

The Step-Through is heavier, clocking in at about 57 pounds unloaded, but with the larger Bafang M600 mid-drive motor, bikers can cruise at speeds up to 28 miles per hour and nearly 20 miles on just motor power alone! The range on this unit is approximately 50 miles. With the ability to mount accessories, this bike is a contender for those looking to explore urban and suburban areas while carrying plenty of gear. Look into the touring package for those looking to carry all the gear.

F5 TRAIL

The F5 is a serious go-anywhere bike. With a top speed of 28 miles per hour, this off- and on-road bike will quickly take you anywhere. The 6061 aluminum frame offers all the rigidity needed while keeping the bike manageable at 61 pounds.

The F5 has a suspension fork by Suntour with 130mm of travel, enough to take on any stump or ravine you face. 27.5” Maxxis wheels provide plenty of grip for pushing through mud or over damp rocks. The ten-speed Shimano drive drain excels at peddled gear changes and powered peddling. Shimano doesn’t just make great reels; they make significant bike parts too.

BLADE 2.0™

The Blade is a belt-drive bike purpose-built for mountain biking. Unlike the F5, the carbon belt drive relies on the Rohloff 500/14 SPEEDHUB to adjust “gear,” pairing the hub with the belt creates a seamless gear change like in an automatic car.

The Blade comes equipped with the 1000 Bafang Ultra Motor, one of the strongest motors on the market to handle the gnarliest terrain. Not only will you be able to get anywhere, but the gear and power combination means that you can reach speeds of 35 miles per hour on flat ground. All this power comes with a 6061 aluminum frame to handle the abuse and a ROXSHOX Pike fork with 160 cm of travel, so your body won’t feel the abuse.

Fat Tire

GLADIATOR 2.0™

There are some places where narrow tire bikes don’t excel. Soft sand or mud will eat a standard bike tire and create a miserable time for you.

Luckily FLX has seen this problem and created a solution, the Gladiator. The Gladiator takes the heart of the F5 and beefs it up.

The Bafang m600 still powers the bike to give excellent power and a range of 40 miles. The frame and suspension are the same, widened to accommodate the Kenda Juggernaut tires. The Kenda tires are 4 inches wide, leaving no surface from sand to snow uncrossable for a biker.

BANDIT™

The Bandit is the bike to choose for the biker looking to keep the retro vibes. The stripped-down tube frame and the exposed power source are an homage to the old “scrambler” and minibike-style ATVs. Unlike the mid-body-mounted motors of the larger bikes, the Bandit has a Bafang rear-hub motor mounted for hill climbing and balance on the already light bike.

The mid-mounted battery pack gives nearly 40 miles per charge, which is pretty impressive considering the bike’s weight of 88 pounds. The long leather seat can accommodate two riders, so you can show your friend how much fun cruising around on the 20″ Kenda tires can be.

Accessories:

We had previously mentioned the touring package while describing the upgrades available on FLX bikes. It seems only fair that we expand further on what the touring package consists of. The touring package is available on every style of bike and comes with:

Cell Phone Mount

The FLX Handlebar Cell phone mount fits most phones with a width between 55mm and 95mm. Perfect for doubling as a GPS or just having hands free tunes for your ride.

Lights

For all your low visibility needs FLX bikes can easily be lighted with chargeable front and rear lights. Between traffic safety and lowlight woods rides, a set of lights is a worthwhile investment.

Fenders

Nobody likes being showered with water from puddles while on the bike. Fenders keep debris away from your tires while keeping sand, water, and mud away from you. FLX makes three colors to match your bike.

Cargo Rack

Be it a lunch box for work or a backpack for camping the rear-mounted cargo rack can keep it securely strapped for your ride. The tube construction

A few other upgrades available for your bike include the thumb throttle to adjust the amount of power from your handlebars. The thumb throttle is only for specific models such as the Gladiator 2.0, Stepthru 1.0/2.0, and F4/F5 Trail. For those looking to increase comfort off-road, the Suntour NCX suspension seat post gives the user 50mm of travel to soften the impacts of riding hard.

Summary

When looking for a way to offset your fuel consumption or explore the backcountry, there is an E-bike designed for you. FLX offers an entire line of well-thought-out, high-quality bikes designed to push the limits of what an E-bike can do. The fun part now is to see how far you and your bike can push the envelope.
