Have You Taken Your Kayak or SUP To The Next Level?

In the last decade, portable watercraft like kayaks and paddleboards have increased in popularity to the point where serious anglers or even adventurous often use nothing but these plastic or vinyl crafts. With this core group of anglers and adventure enthusiasts looking to push the limit of their boats, they have also created the cottage industry of getting further with the same gear. Until recently, the distance a kayaker could travel was limited to how far they could paddle. When pedal drives were introduced, kayakers could increase their distance by using their most powerful muscle groups. Bixpy has taken kayakers even further with purpose-built motors and other high-tech equipment designed exclusively for small watercraft.

During a fishing trip in 2014, Houman Nikmanesh was exhausted from peddling his Hobbie kayak against the tide off the coast of San Diego. Nikmanesh got home eventually and was determined to find an option that would let him and other bluewater kayakers safely fish offshore without the risk of exhaustion. In 2017 his company Bixpy released their first battery-powered jet propulsion system, and the rest is history.

Motors

The Bixpy J-2 motor is a compact electric motor designed to power small watercraft like kayaks and paddleboards. Unlike traditional motors with an exposed propeller, the J-2 was designed as a jet propulsion motor, taking key design ideas from hydroelectric turbines and jet engines. The result of deconstructing and scaling down this turbine design is the creation of a compact motor that produces more power per pound than any other motor on the market. All aspects of the J-2 are streamlined to reduce drag and keep functioning in the harshest of conditions. The body design and shroud that protects the turbine create a snag-free cage that won’t foul on a slack line as a propeller would.

The J-2 was designed to last under constant use in fresh and saltwater. Plastics and polymers used are selected for their rigidity and their weight. Bixpy spared no expense in finding the lightest plastics available for the J-2. All plastics are infused with anti-UV compounds to keep the sun’s rays from compromising the integrity of the materials. The metal drive shaft of the impeller system is sourced from the most corrosion-resistant stainless steel on the market, exceeding the corrosion ratings of the industry-standard SS316. Motor heat sinks are aircraft-grade aluminum, and all of the exposed bolts are SS316 coated with a titanium coating to halt corrosion and damage. Bixpy uses proprietary glass-infused nylon for impact resistance and to keep movement points smooth.

The question everyone wants to be answered is how fast can the J-2 go, and more importantly, how long can it go for? While many factors can alter these numbers, Bixpy has offered ratings based on the kayak or watercraft the J-2 is attached to. For a loaded Hobbie Pro angler kayak, the J-2 can run at 1.3 mph for about 12 hours, at a medium speed of 2.5 mph for about 4 hours, and at a high speed of 4.5MPH for 1.25 hours. Lighter watercraft like a paddleboard can expect slightly faster top speed and motor for 12 hours! That is an incredible amount of time for a small motor to function. No doubt the J-2 is an awesome motor, but what powers it is just as important to Bixpy’s success.

Bixpy PP-166 Power Station

For those who want an ultra-reliable power source to run smaller electronics like depth finders, cell phones, and GPS units, the Power Station is ideal. The PP-166 Power Station can’t power the J-2, but it can power everything else you will need on your watercraft with three outputs. At just four pounds, the 7″x7x”4″ power pack will fit anywhere and be as waterproof and rugged as the larger PP-378; you know it will be ready when you need it.

Motor Mounts

The J-2 can be mounted to virtually any boat. Depending on your watercraft’s make and model, Bixpy has multiple mounting options available on its website. Bixpy even has a mounting option for mounting to the fin panel of a kayak or paddleboard with no screws required for boaters that run inflatables.

Steering

When you need to steer your J-2, there are several different styles to choose from. A tiller-style attachment is the most user-friendly but does require the use of a hand, which is not desirable when battling fish. A wired joystick steering system is available to keep boaters facing forward while fishing or navigating tight streams. Lastly and most familiar to kayakers, a peddle drive system is available for hands-free steering.

Summary

Bixpy is a unique company that filled a niche in the market. It is a niche filled with watersport enthusiasts looking to fish, camp, and explore farther than they could under paddle or even pedal power. From high output motors to floating battery packs, Bixpy has made a name for itself in the world of small watercraft. It’s about time Bixpy makes its name known on your boat.
